One of the guys at work who is just over 50 years old has started training (actually a few weeks ago) in preperation for the L.A. Marathon 2007. He is out of shape, sits at his desk for 7-10 hours a day and barely did anything remotely close to a workout during the last Century. If he can do it then damn the machine, I can too.

Ran across this link today, looks like a good program to follow so this is where I will start/base my training.

Just an observation I had this weekend.

I have been doing a 5mile loop that takes me about 50mins to complete on average most days. I usually run 2-3 times a week and will generally begin to flatten my pace out around the half-way mark, meaning that this is where I start to feel challenged in the run.

This time around though I wanted to break up my pace and I set a goal of 6-7 miles in about an hour for my Sunday run. A doable goal that would also I think add a little more stress to the run to stimulate some needed physical progress to my workouts. In the end I amazed myself with how much energy I had during the entire run. I have to double check the total distance but I’m estimating it to be around 7miles and I finished in 1 hour, a new best for me.

What I did different; I paid more attention to what I ate for the day. Five small meals (includes protein shake) spread out over the day I think really helped out. I had a huge amount of energy and fatigue didn’t set in – I trully think I could have gone for another 5 miles if I had more time. Additionally my left knee and hip bothered me around the last part of the run otherwise I think I could have even done a better time.

No this is not a Photoshop’d picture and yes that is a real person.

Greg Valnetino is his name and apparently he wanted really, really, really big arms.

This story first caught my attention on TLC with the show titled “The man with exploding arms”. The show focuses primarily on the use of steroids within body building with a slant towards the excessive and abusive side of the drug.

I have to say that the idea of using steroids to enhance my visits to the gym has crossed my mind. Doing so now doesn’t seem too detrimental to me, since I am already over 30, heck it might even be helpful. My fear is the so called ‘roid rage’ and of course long-term health effects. I might be alittle naive but a short term 1-2 cycles just to get me to significant gains in a short period could be worth it.

Professional athletes and medical patients have used steroids to help with healing and repair of injuries. In short, non-abusive use of steroids could have its place.

AUTHORS DISCLAIMER: I’m not condoning the use, I am observing the fact that steroids when used properly and under the supervision of a professional have their purpose in sports-therapy.

[I started writing this post some time ago, the TLC show has come and gone but you might find it on bitorrent.]
